How to Get Started

Q: What is K9 Water Leak Detection University™? A: We are the first specialized training for K9PDA certification program for canine water leak detection teams, combining utility expertise with professional dog training. Our mission is to conserve water, protect infrastructure, and support communities by preparing certified handlers and dogs.
Q: Do dogs really detect underground water leaks? A: Yes. Just like dogs are trained to detect narcotics or explosives, our dogs are trained to search for chlorinated odor, even small ones that electronic equipment may miss.
Q: Why is water leak detection important? A: Undetected leaks waste millions of gallons of water, increase utility costs, damage infrastructure, and cause environmental harm. Early detection saves time, money, and natural resources.
Q: Do you provide the dogs, or do I bring my own? A: Both options are available. We can provide a trained detection dog, or you can bring your own dog for evaluation and training.
Q: How long is the training program? A: Training is structured into four core courses with workshops and field experience. The full program typically takes several months, depending on your chosen pathway.
Q: Do graduates receive certification? A: K9 Water Leak Detection University provides the training, preparation, and testing process for handler and canine teams. Teams that successfully meet the required pass/fail certification standards may earn certification through K9 Pipeline Detection Association as professional K9 Water Leak Detection Teams. Certified teams may also participate in continuing education and future recertification opportunities.
Q: Is financing or sponsorship available? A: We work with utilities, municipalities, and potential sponsors who may cover tuition for qualified candidates. We also offer flexible payment options.
Q: How can canine leak detection benefit our utility? A: Dogs detect leaks faster, more accurately, and at lower cost than traditional methods. This reduces water loss, prevents infrastructure damage, and helps utilities meet sustainability goals.
Q: Do you work in partnership with existing leak detection crews? A: Yes. Our certified teams complement—not replace—traditional leak detection methods. We collaborate with water operators and leak detection businesses to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Q: Are your services available outside Oklahoma? A: Yes. Our teams are trained and certified for deployment nationwide, and we are developing international partnerships as well.
Q: Can we schedule a pilot project before committing? A: Yes. We can coordinate an on-site presentation, demonstration, or pilot deployment tailored to your utility or organization. This allows your team to observe canine-assisted leak detection in real-world conditions, better understand the process, and ask questions before considering a pilot project or long-term collaboration.
Q: What breeds of dogs are best for this work? A: Sporting breeds (such as retrievers and spaniels) are common, but many breeds can succeed if they have strong scenting ability, drive, and focus.
Q: How do you ensure the welfare of the dogs? A: Dog health, safety, and happiness are our top priorities. All training methods are positive, humane, and enrichment-based, ensuring dogs thrive in their work.
Q: How do I get started? A: You can apply through our Enrollment page, request a consultation for your utility, or contact us directly for more information.
